Common Basement & Cellar Pump Faults
A basement pump failure can escalate quickly. These are the most common faults our engineers attend, and what typically causes them:
Level control float switch stuck or failed Float switches are the most frequent cause of basement pump faults. A float stuck in the "on" position will run the pump continuously until the motor overheats; a float stuck in the "off" position will allow the water level to rise unchecked until the high-level alarm triggers — or until the basement floods. Float switches are inspected and tested on every service visit and are among the most cost-effective parts to replace proactively.
Blockage causing the electrics to trip Debris — leaves, grit, rag — accumulates in the sump and can lodge in the impeller, causing the motor to draw excess current and trip the overload protection. In basements connected to a sewage system, "flushable" wipes and sanitary products are a particularly common culprit despite the packaging claim. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping pump; isolate the supply and call an engineer.
Failed non-return valve A failed non-return valve allows water to flow back into the sump after each pump cycle, forcing the pump to cycle repeatedly for the same net effect. This increases both energy consumption and wear. The valve is checked as standard during every basement pump service visit.
Pump failing to start, or not shutting off Failure to start can be caused by a control panel fault, a seized impeller, or motor failure. A pump that won't shut off is almost always a float switch or level sensor fault. Both require engineer attendance — do not leave a pump running continuously unattended.

The high-level alarm is a safety feature that activates when the water level in the sump has risen to a critical point — usually because the pump has stopped working or can’t keep pace with inflow. Even if the packaging says “flushable,” these wipes do not break down fast enough for a sewage pump and can cause serious pump problems.
