Tank Cleaning, Chlorination and Disinfection

At Mawdsleys Pump Services, we provide a complete chlorination and cleaning service for all hot and cold water systems. Chlorination is the industry standard process for sterilising drinking water and ensuring it’s fit for human consumption.

As well as removing any bacteria that may already be present, regular tank cleaning prevents any sludging or sediment build up which can allow legionella bacteria to grow.

All of our works are carried to ACOP L8 standards and we use specialist aqua vac technology to achieve best results. Following the tank clean, we provide a full report with any recommendations as a result of the test and can assist with any aftercare or maintenance that may be required.

Recommended Frequencies for Tank Chlorination

Whilst there is no set frequency for the chlorination, cleaning and disinfection of tanks – those responsible for the water system are also responsible for ensuring it is safe and fit for purpose.

Mawdsleys Pumps recommends an annual water test to ensure there are no harmful microbes present and a more frequent visual inspection of the water tanks to check for any visible issues within the tank such as the presence of corrosion or growth of mould.

Additionally, hot and cold water systems should be chlorinated, cleaned, flushed and disinfected in the following situations.

Legionella Testing

If you have had a legionella risk assessment undertaken and have been advised that there is a risk of legionella in your system, we can provide fast and accurate results for all kinds of water systems. Samples taken are sent to an independent UKAS accredited laboratory for testing and can be ready in as little as a week.

Following the test, we can provide you with the analysis as well as a report with any remedial works required. We can handle all aftercare work to ensure your water system is compliant including bespoke maintenance contracts to reduce the risk of any problems arising in the future.

Bespoke Booster Pump Maintenance Contracts

Unlike other suppliers, we can provide a complete booster pump maintenance service including testing, cleaning, chlorination and aftercare to ensure compliance, prevent outbreaks within the system and reduce the risk of an unexpected breakdown.

Chlorine is the industry standard as it effectively kills any bacteria and viruses that may be in the water; ensuring it is fit for human consumption upon delivery to the building’s residents.

All man made hot and cold water systems provide an adequate environment for legionella to grow, but there are factors which can impact how well it thrives:

  • The presence of rust, sludge, scale or biofilm can promote growth.
  • If the water is stored rather than recirculated.
  • The temperature, legionella thrives between 20-45c but will die at 60c.

Additionally, the water temperature and whether the water is stored or recirculated can impact how well the bacteria grows. Legionella can thrive in all water systems of all sizes, but particular attention should be paid to:

  • Cooling towers
  • Hot and cold water systems
  • Evaporative condensers
  • Spas and swimming pools
  • Humidification plants

As an employer, or person in control of premises, you must appoint someone competent to help you meet your health and safety duties and to take responsibility for controlling any identified risk from exposure to legionella bacteria.

A competent person, often known as the responsible person, is someone with sufficient authority, competence, necessary skills, knowledge of the system, and experience.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the responsible person must understand how to:

  • Identify and assess sources of risk.
  • Manage any risks.
  • Prevent or control any risks.
  • Keep and maintain the correct records.

The BSI British Standard BS7592:2008 Sampling for Legionella Bacteria in water systems is the code of practice that needs to be adhered to by law.
