Saving the Gears of History at Dunkirk Mill Museum

The Client

The Dunkirk Mill Museum is part of a textile trust dedicated to preserving the rich history of the cloth industry in the West of England. Mr Trevor Ford is a chairman of the trust and alongside him is a dedicated team of 50 volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure these important historical demonstrations remain accessible to the public. The museum features two historic water mills—one demonstrating weaving techniques and the other showcasing cloth processing. A key attraction at one of the museums is its operational water wheel, which powers historic milling machinery and provides visitors with a unique glimpse into Britain’s industrial heritage.

The Challenge

The museum faced an existential threat to its operations when the primary pump responsible for driving the water wheel failed. Because the museum cannot rely on natural river flow to power the wheel, the pump is the literal heartbeat of the site. Without it, the milling machines stand still, and the museum cannot fulfill its educational mission.

To make matters more complex, the pump—a 24-year-old unit installed in 2002—was housed in a damp, confined environment, leading to severe corrosion. After receiving recommendations from industry contacts, the team turned to Mawdsleys Pump Services for assistance. When Mr. Ford reached out, the museum was facing an indefinite closure, risking their reputation and the disappointment of scheduled tour groups.

The Solution

Following an initial consultation, our team determined that the issue required an on-site inspection by an experienced engineer. Mawdsleys Pump Services rapidly arranged a site visit.

Upon arrival, our engineer discovered extensive corrosion throughout the pump assembly. Through a systematic diagnostic process, he identified that the pump shaft and impeller had seized after years of operation in a challenging environment. After carefully freeing the seized components, our engineer restored movement to the impeller and lubricated critical parts. Beyond the mechanical fix, he also inspected the 2002-era motor starter. He identified that the electrical overload settings had been incorrectly configured since installation. He optimised the system to match the pump’s data, ensuring future protection against electrical failure.

Within a short period of arriving on site, the root cause had been identified and corrected. The pump was restarted, tested multiple times under operating conditions, and returned to full service.

The Results

The impact of the intervention was immediate. By restoring the pump in under two hours, Mawdsleys helped with:

  • Operational Continuity: The water wheel and all connected woollen mill machinery were back in full operation before the first visitors of the day arrived.
